41 Weeks

Synopsis

Valérie is the accountant for a retirement home, she is also pregnant. On a romantic week-end with her boyfriend Paul, she forgot her pill and now they are both unexpectedly hurtling down the path to parenthood. Before having their baby, Paul and Valérie's relationship is turned upside down by having to adapt to a pregnant woman's rhythm, the decision to move in together and finding a suitable flat for the family-to-be despite an unsupportive half of the family.

At the same time, Valérie, whose function is not so much keeping the books up-to-date as contributing to the running of the home has to continue handling the demanding madness of the small community of old to very old people she works with. From bitter spinster leading a gang of scared old ladies to sweet grand-mother trying to survive in this environment, from cheeky old Casanova on the run, she acts as a friend, an investigator or a DJ.

Valérie's pregnancy progresses and she constantly find out more about what to expect. Scans, nursery decorating, shopping for the baby… and the dodo she is turning into, facing the crowds rushing to IKEA at the week-end and then D-Day arrives.

Valérie, being French, adds to the story a touch of sarcasm relating to the differences between France and England, and the never-ending rivalry between the two countries.

Making both end of the cycle of life meet, the story's development is varied, the pace is fast, the anecdotes and events are unexpectedly funny. At the same time, the characters' personalities and sensitivity builds up it a very touching story.
